LOCATION: Porto Alegre, Brazil

The Salvador França favela is an unassisted community where residents do not yet have legalized land ownership, despite having lived there for sufficient time to be entitled to it. The site is home to 200 families who settled the area 60 years ago, many of whom lack basic sanitation.

The FAVELA REHABILITATION DESIGN was planned to include two main local streets to better integrate the community into the city and three squares. The project aims to retain some of the existing houses and preserve a vegetated area, one of the site’s unique features.

The design intends to create nine residential blocks with three different types of apartments (one, two, or three bedrooms). Commercial areas for local stores are also planned. The design addresses primary needs, including a primary school for the community and other solutions like green roofs on all buildings, which will serve as urban farms.
